Direct Support Professional (DSP)
Job Description:
This position provides support to adults with intellectual and physical challenges. Direct Support employees empower people to live independently in the community. DSP’s provide support to ensure optimal health & safety, assist people with daily living skills in order to improve their quality of life.
Responsibilities:

Behavior must be professional at all times consistent with AKM of Tennessee, Inc. culture, mission, values, philosophy, policies and procedures. Treat individuals and others with dignity and respect. Assist individuals to lead safe and healthy lifestyles. Monitor and report changes in personal preferences, general health, appearance, behavior, and activity level. Maintain a clean, safe, and secure environment at all times.
Support individuals to follow pre-established orders by medical professionals.
Support individuals to plan and participate in daily activities such as household chores, recreational activities, physical fitness and money management. Assist with personal hygiene & toileting needs such as shaving, brushing teeth, bathing/showering, shampooing, and getting dressed. Complete all required AKM of Tennessee, Inc. and Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (DIDD) training and earn medication administration certification for unlicensed personnel. Safely transport individuals in the community.
Qualifications:
High school diploma (preferred), or equivalent
0-3 years working in human services, preferably with adults or children with intellectual disabilities
Pass a background check
Possess a valid TN driver’s license, proof of registration, and insurable driving record
Fluent in oral and written English
Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities required training and/or certifications preferred
Physical Requirements:
Lifting up to 50 pounds
Transferring individuals from: (with or without mechanical lifts)
Bed to floor/wheelchair
Floor/wheelchair to bed
In and out of shower/bath
Into and out of vehicles
Assisting individuals in bathing/showering, hand washing, changing soiled clothing, and toileting needs
Changing client’s briefs
Bending & twisting – neck, waist
Housekeeping e.g., laundry, vacuuming, cleaning showers, tubs, dishes, taking out garbage
Cooking & preparing meals nutritious meals
Standing, climbing, kneeling, pushing, e.g. wheelchairs
Assisting individuals in taking their medications
Conducting required evacuation drills, disaster management and other safety training
